So today could be really positive for my future but I won't say more as I don't want to jinx anything! Asami has also been exploring further and has learnt how to jump up on the gecko's tanks. She has to slowly creep around so she can spread her weight around without falling through the mesh! She doesn't actually look at the geckos but she's fascinated with the locust! She has also done a really stinky poop which the boy is currently cleaning up. It's hard to imagine such a smell coming from such a cute animal!

Just a quick one today as I want to get a good nights sleep. We had my aunty round for tea which was nice then my parents came over with little Pixie. Instead of barking at Asami she seemed to want to pull away so the second meeting didn't make any progress either! My Mum also bought us some more decorations to add to our collection!

Film Review: Into The Abyss (2011)

Into The Abyss

"Live your dash"

Into The Abyss; A Tale Of Death, A Tale Of Life is a feature length documentary film by Werner Herzog. The documentary focuses on two men serving time for murder. One man, Michael Perry received the death sentence for the killing of Sandra Stotler, whereas his accomplice Jason Burkett received a life sentence for the murder of Sandra's son and friend (Perry was also suspected of being involved in these killings but was never charged). They were all killed over the fact that Perry and Burkett wanted to drive Sandra's new car.

The documentary doesn't really focus on the details of the crimes and the innocence or guilt of the men, but instead tells the story of their experience in prison and on death row. Herzog asks them about their sense of the passing of time and how Perry copes with the thought of the death sentence hanging over him. The film is very similar to Herzog's On Death Row, a television mini series which also looks at prison life in the same manner but questions different death row inmates. The documentaries are more conversations with these inmates rather than the typical documentary formula of exploring and analysing the facts.

The documentary also interviews family members of the victims as well as a pastor who visits death row inmates during their final days and an ex-state executioner. It is these last two people who make the documentary so interesting and different to the run of the mill prison documentary; how many of us really consider what happens to the people surrounding death row cases whom are not directly involved in the case itself. It is the pastor and the executioner that show more emotion than even the prisoners themselves.

The film's primary message is to get us to question capital punishment. 'We are all people, who has the right to take another's life?' questions the film. It does encourage us to see everyone featured in the documentary simply as a human being, rather than the caricatures of a monstrous criminal waiting to die, tragic victims who can never go on to lead normal lives or someone simply doing their job. Nor does it try to rationalise nor reason why or how they could have committed the crimes; this would allow the view to be swayed in their opinions by their innocence or guilt. Although I don't feel the film makes us feel sorry for the inmates; I don't think this would be possible considering the pointless stupidity of their crime, it does make us see them as people dealing with a tough situation brought upon themselves through consequences of their own action by painting a picture of their lives in that moment.

Personally, I'm still undecided. I think it's a good thing as it serves as a deterrent and rids the world of some hideous characters, but I also wonder how putting another family through the death of their loved one can be fair on them.

There's also a great interview with Herzog here which goes into a lot more depth.

This evening I went out for a friend's birthday. We spent around 5 hours together and it was nice to have a laugh and a catch up. We've also decided to go on a road trip tomorrow to see any crazy sights that we can find nearby, so watch this space!

Film Review: Identity (2003)

Identity

"As I was going up the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd go away"

I remember watching this film shortly after it came out on DVD whilst I was a teenager at a girly sleepover years ago. Although I couldn't remember a lot of the details I remember the rain. Strangely, the best part of the film for me is the rain. The noise and look of the rain is awesome and really adds to the sense of drama and entrapment at the hotel.

The plot sees 10 complete strangers becoming stranded at a motel in the torrential rain. The local area is flooded so they have no choice but to wait there for the night. Murders begin occurring and one by one the 10 become fewer and fewer without knowing who is doing it. A seemingly unrelated storyline runs throughout which sees a group of professionals discussing the case of a death row inmate. I won't ruin the end but the twist is a great spin on the plot.

The characters cover a wide spread of individual personalities. There's the hero limo driver (John Cusack), the angry cop (Ray Liotta) escorting a prisoner (Jake Busey), a prostitute heading for a new life (Amanda Peet), a bitchy actress (Rebecca De Mornay) along with a family (John C McGinley, Leila Kenzle and Brett Loehr), newly weds (Clea DuVall and William Lee Scott) and the shady motel owner (John Hawkes). The whole cast is fabulous and create really believable characters. Their relationships with each other are dynamic and leave you wanting to see more. Although the characters are mostly likable, it's hard to know who to trust and for most of the film everyone is a suspect.

Director James Mangold has directed some of my favourite films; Girl, Interrupted (1999) and Walk The Line (2005). So, I will definitely be adding some more of his films to my LoveFilm list. I really like the style of the film, it could have ended up a lot more cliched but Mangold keeps it fresh and tense throughout.

I couldn't rate this film enough. It's got an intriguing plot that keeps you gripped throughout, great sets, a mix of different personalities within the characters and is strung together with tension and mystery. Personally, I would have like to have seen a little more focus on the characters trying to work out their connections to each other although I do think it is covered in general in the film.

So today is my 300th PED blog! Which means a mere 66 days to go before my task for this year is over! I'm definitely wanting to carry on so I might just carry the numbers on rather than starting from scratch again. We're trying like mad to save up every penny at the moment, so we have a bit pot of all out loose small change, it quickly mounts up and every penny counts!

Today's PED is of Asami's new cat tower. It's a beast! It's 5'6 and has two sleeping compartments, a little treat bowl and two fluffy mice. She actually seems to really like it so it wasn't a waste of money (it was a bargain at £50!).

Today has been a wasted day. I worked until 2pm then had a nice afternoon off where I could have got some stuff done. Instead I was so tired I slept from around 3.30pm to 8pm. I'm still exhausted and can't wait to settle into bed again already. This is not good. I started watching the film Identity before I fell asleep so will finish that tomorrow and give a bit of a review. Asami has been good this afternoon and spent most of her time sleeping too.

I Recommend: Shower Time

I'm going to start upping my blog variations, so I'm starting with 'I Recommend', which I did do a few times at the start of my blog. So we're starting with shower time products.

Shower Time

So these are a few of my favourite shower products.

Soap & Glory Clean On Me Shower Cream - I love Soap & Glory products. I think the packaging is quirky and retro and makes it stand out. All the products seem to smell really nice and work well. I love this shower cream as it leaves my skin feeling soft and clean without drying it out. It lathers up really nicely as well.

Johnsons Baby Shampoo - I adore baby shampoo! Out of all the shampoos I've ever used it is by far the best for my hair. At the moment I'm using the detangling variety but I also use the calming and original ones too. The detangling one is working wonders for me; I have thick, naturally curly hair that can be a nightmare to comb, especially if I've left it to go curly as I don't brush it when it's dry otherwise it looks like a big poofy mess. It leaves my hair really soft and shiny too.

Tangle Teaser Brush - Again, as I have thick, curly, knotty hair it's really useful for me. I find it works just as well on dry hair as it does wet and it's a lot more gentle than using a wide toothed comb. I originally thought it was a bit on the pricey side when I bought it for around £10 but now I see it's totally worth the money. I've had it for a good year or two and it's still as good as new. The brush is similar to brushes used on horses and the product was actually on Dragon's Den but didn't get invested in due to a bit of a strange demonstration, but I'm really glad they found the investment somewhere!

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Treatment - This is the most amazing product! I have actually ranted and raved about it which I'm not usually a fan of doing. When I first used it I started conversations with friends just so that I could tell them about it! It's a really quick treatment and has huge benefits that you can tell as soon as you start to  rinse it out. I bought it after I had stripped and re-dyed my hair as it had gone dry and straw-like and it instantly restored it back to how it was. I couldn't stop touching it! It smells nice and goes a long way too, and is also a really good price! Definately my top product recommendation!

I also love:
Bed Head shampoos and conditioners - particularly the honey and oatmeal one as it smells lovely!
TREsemme shampoos and conditioners - especially the 24 hour volume ones.
Original Source shower gel -  they all smell nice but I adore the tea tree and mint ones.
Clean & Clear Daily Exfoliating Cleaning Wash - really removes all the dirt from your face.
Radox Shower Smoothies - Great exfoliating scrub for the body.

Photo Every Day #297

Just a quick one. Today I bought our first batch of xmas decorations for this year's tree. We already have some Nightmare Before Christmas baubles and a Jack Skellington tree topper so we're off to a good start!

Song Of The Day: Busted - Loser Kid
Reason: God I used to love Busted, they're still great and their first album holds memories for me

Highlight Of The Day: A nice foot rub from the boy.

I mentioned a little while ago that we'd started sponsoring a dog called Lexi through The Dogs Trust. Well our starter pack came, it's all very cute and tells us about Lexi and the charity, plus we got a nice magnet and car sticker so it's all good. Can't wait to get our first letter/card from Lexi!! We also dropped the rats off at my aunties house as she's looking after them whilst we've got an inspection tomorrow. Asami is going there for the day tomorrow too just so that they're all out of the way. The house already feels so empty and quiet without the boys. It'll be awful without Asami too.

Lexi:

Song Of The Day: Pink - Blow Me (One Last Kiss)
Reason: I don't actually know many of the words, but I've got the music stuck in my head, I'm just sort of mumbling along to my made up lyrics to fill in the blanks.

Highlight Of The Day: Finishing getting the house ready for the inspection

Recently I started reading JD Salinger's For Esme - With Love And Squalor which is a book of short stories by my favourite author. So far, I've only read A Perfect Day For Bananafish which I've read a few times before. I love the ending, it's so real, sharp and shocking. The book is also referenced in some of Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events books, mainly The Ersatz Elevator through the characters Jerome and Esme Squalor. Jerome is also Salinger's first name for those who didn't know. I want to finish this book then start on Unfortunate Events again asap as it's been far too long since I've read them.

Today we put a reserve on the house we want to buy! So exciting. Next we have to apply for the mortgage and get all of that sorted. I'm trying not to get super excited over it just yet just on the off chance that anything goes wrong as I'd be heartbroken! I've also found about a million things in  the Bodie & Fou catalogue that I really want to buy. Sadly it's all rather expensive but I may purchase the odd piece every now and then.

Bodie & Fou:

Song Of The Day: Machine Head - Elegy
Reason: Amazing song from an awesome band. Plus when I worked at Sonisphere 2009 I was stood a meter away from them in their van heading towards the stage! Robb Flynn is the living definition of masculinity in my eyes.

Highlight Of The Day: More progress!

Photo Every Day #293

Today we have made a bit of progress in regards to making a decision about buying a house. More to be revealed when things are more set in stone one way or another as I don't want to jinx anything! But this could potentially be our first home!

Today has been a bit of a nothing day. Nothing much happened this morning, nothing much happened in work and nothing much happened this evening! I'm hoping tomorrows KFC night with a friend breaks the nothing! I'm also hoping to break my kitten cycle with my PEDs! I've just been feeling a bit uninspired recently and I haven't particularly seen anything of interest. But here's a last one just before I break the cycle!

Today's PED is a compilation of photos of the rats enjoying their new hammock from BitsOHeaven over on Etsy. Their products are so cute and it's so well made, much better than the faux fur hammock the boys had previously. It's a lot softer and lighter but seems like it will be nice and snug for them whilst they sleep. It also came with 4 big hooks which are also a lot better than the simple hooks I have on some of their other things.I haven't washed it yet, but imagine when I do it will be just as lovely. I feel like we really got a bargain too as it was just under £10 and was shipped really quickly, especially seeing as it was coming from America to England. I love it as it feels so special and personal, plus it looks nice in their cage! They tend to sleep one on the very top and one in the middle or one on the top and one at the bottom. I've also seen Jacques and Quigley asleep in the middle with Klaus on top too! I love the patterns and I already have my eye on this spooky cobweb print one and this skeleton print one. I would certainly recommend!

Today we tried to introduce Pixie to Asami. Whilst it didn't go terribly wrong or anything like that, I wouldn't say it went well. Pixie just barked from a distance and Asami just hissed and went back inside her drawer. Ah well, we can just keep trying and if it's not meant to be then so be it. This evening we went to my Dad's for tea. We had pulled Cajun pork on buns which was really nice, followed by a super big piece of homemade sponge cake. He'd also made us some homemade bread so I'll be using it for my sandwiches tomorrow. It looks like an overgrown muffin, so can't wait to see what it tastes like.

Today we went looking at houses on a development I liked the look of. I've fallen in love with the houses already! So I'm determined to start some major saving. Since xmas is coming up and it's always an expensive time of year, I'm going to try and make as many people as I can presents, most of which I'm guessing will be photographs in various forms. I'm also going to start making our traditional 'cheesy, terrible family photo' cards. Last year it only featured me and Steven but this year I want to at least include Asami if not more of the zoo!

Today has been productive but not very. I took Pixie to the vets with my step dad to get her knee checked after she hurt it falling off the bed the other week. She was shaking horribly the whole time and was relieved to be back outside. I hate seeing her like that. After that we went for a walk with her which was nice as it was quite pleasant outside. We're also started looking a bit more in depth at houses which is exciting, I just wish we were in a position right now to start the ball rolling! Then I spent the evening applying for a few jobs, so fingers crossed!

Photo Every Day #285

Today has been a rather lazy day, I manged to catch up on some sleep but now am not tired and it's 1.30am! I went out for my tea with friends which was nice and I've been looking at houses and mortgages all night. It's all very confusing; far too many terms and conditions, rules and regulations! All I want to do is have my own house, I promise I'll pay it all back eventually! Today's PED is a photo from college last night, I'm going to work on more 'collections' of items to describe people methinks. Just as a little project of my own.

Today I went to Bents Garden Center with my Mum and Step Dad. I didn't know but it was actually their official opening of the xmas decorations whilst we were there. There was a town crier and a Santa Claus and a super tanned Mrs Claus! I really like Bents at xmas, I love their trees and how nice they look caked full of decorations. I've decided for our first xmas in our apartment that I was an ice blue, white and silver theme. We also stopped in their cafe to get a cake. I had hot chocolate with a slice of coffee cake, which was really nice, but I couldn't finish it it was so rich!

I'm going to post this photo as a follow on from yesterdays PED. Asami was all nice and cutely asleep on top of the pillow, but slowly she began to sink....
Asami Sinking

Song Of The Day: Ludwig Van Beethoven - Ninth Symphony
Reason: I've started to listen to Classical FM a lot more whilst I'm driving as I find it relaxing and can help me to develop my creative thoughts a lot further. Plus this features heavily in A Clockwork Orange which is one of my favourite films.

Highlight Of The Day: A good evening at college learning about architectural photography.

Photo Every Day #283

Asami is currently asleep on my pillow. I think she's hinting at me to go and sleep in the spare bedroom. She was nicely settling in her own bed, complete with it's fleecy blanket, but ten minutes ago decided my pillows looked nicer, so that was that. We bought her some more Whiskas kitten wet food pouches from Asda as they were on offer, so she's now being treated to; 4 kinds of 'steamed' fish, including sardines which actually smells really nice; 4 kinds of 'grilled' food, including rabbit and ordinary meat/fish pouches. I definitely give my pets a higher standard of food than I do for myself! But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Photo Every Day #282

I nearly forgot I had this photo to share! It's of nice, big red toadstools that I found under a bush at the Walled Garden. Apparently, the word toadstool is not the type of mushroom as I thought it was, but it's actually a made up word which is found in German folklore and early fairy stories. It relates to German stories in which toads sat on the mushroom in order to catch the flies that were trying to get to eat the mushroom itself. It also tends to be used when mushrooms are suspicious or poisonous. In other news, today was Asami's first trip to the vets. It didn't go down too well with her which isn't surprising to be fair. She had her first vaccination, was given flea and worming treatment and she had to have to ears swabbed and cleaned as the vet thought it looked like she had either ear mites, which are common in kittens, or a build up of wax. Either way, she has nice clean ears now, but has been scratching them all day as I think the drops must have made them feel funny. She's been very sleepy and is now conked out on a hot water bottle under a fleecy blanket.

Today I decided to strip my hair so that I can dye it red properly. In fairness the colour stripper has taken off a fair amount of the black dye, especially on my roots which have gone back to their original (dark blonde) colour pretty much. I'd love to go back blonde for a bit but can't really see it happening. I'll post a picture when it's settled a little bit tomorrow. But for today, I will treat you with another photo of the stunning Asami.

Today was the boy's feed the penguins gift experience day at Chester Zoo. He got to go into the enclosure with the penguins and feed them fish whilst they were swimming less than a meter away! I just took photos since the experience was only for him as they're not cheap gifts! I'll upload a proper photo blog for the day when I've done some editing on the photos I took.

Today's PED is another of the gorgeous Asami. She had a visitor, my friend from work who also has a ginger female cat. Apparently, ginger female cats are quite hard to find! We had no idea but just liked her because she has personality and beautiful huge eyes. This is her sleeping on my pillow, her latest sleeping place. Today I also got my hair cut at Vanity Hair Studio in Latchford Village. I would definately recommend it as the girl we had was brilliant (I forgot to ask her name)! Even though I only had a trim, I feel my hair looks and feels a lot better, especially as I'm half way through the growing out a fringe process. The boy had his hair done too and she's thinned it out perfectly! I would definately recommend Vanity as their prices are so reasonable for the service and finished results.

Dogs Trust Sponsor A Dog - Lexi

Whilst we were at HOYS yesterday we signed up to the sponsor a dog scheme run by the Dogs Trust charity organisation. They take in stray and unwanted dogs and try to rehome them. They also never put healthy dogs down just because they don't have the space or resources which is great. I think it's really important to invest a small donation as regular as possible into charities such as this because animals can be treated so cruelly by heartless people which is never their fault. They don't deserve to be treated badly and I'd be heartbroken if anyone abused or mistreated my animals. So whilst I can't adopt every animal going like I would like to, we've chosen to adopt Lexi, a dalmation-labrador cross and give £9 a month towards his keep. He lives in Liverpool and we can actually go visit him! So I definitely want to do that at some point and take him a toy and some treats. I will also be making sure I keep you updated when he sends me his updates and making sure I stick to my Charity Of The Month blog posts as they really could make a difference, even if one person donates a couple of pounds to a cause.

Just a quick one as we're trying to have an early night before we go to Horse Of The Year Show tomorrow! Today Asami learnt what strokes and cuddles were, ventured into the front room for the first time and met the ratties (throught their cage). She's been really good and has made a lot of progress settling in. I love having her here.

So for our announcement! Today we brought home our latest family member, a little ginger kitten we've named Asami! Asami means beautiful morning or morning sea in Japanese. We never set out to get a cat, I wouldn't even say I was a cat person, but here's the story. We were going to go to the butchers that the boy used last week to get some more meat. I noticed there was a small pet shop so suggested we go in to buy some ratty treats. We picked our treats and had a little look around when I spotted two big cages with kittens inside. Asami was playing about and eventually we had a little hold. It really was love at first sight and I begged the boy to let us have her. So 24 hours later here we are with a new pet moggy! So, here she is!
